Malaspina Labs’ Always-on VoiceBoost Suite Now Available for Cadence HiFi DSP Cores

Feb 14, 2014 — Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDNS) and Malaspina Labs today announced the availability of Malaspina’s VoiceBoost™ suite of phonetic speech enhancement technologies for the Cadence® Tensilica® HiFi family of DSP (digital signal processing) cores. The VoiceBoost suite includes ASR (automatic speech recognition) assist audio preprocessing, speaker-dependent and speaker-independent low-power voice activation, and noise reduction solutions. The HiFi Audio/Voice DSPs provide an ultra-low power hardware platform for SoC (system-on-chip) designers to implement this software. Cadence and Malaspina Labs are scheduled to demonstrate the VoiceBoost suite of solutions in Hall 6, Stand 6L36 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 25–28, 2014.

“Malaspina’s VoiceBoost is an ideal match to our HiFi DSPs, as they enable devices to handle challenging tasks such as comprehending arm’s length speaking distances, overcoming the challenges of single-microphone devices, and compensating for devices held in arbitrary orientations,” said Larry Przywara, director of audio/voice IP marketing, Cadence. “Because these features need to always be on, battery life is critical. The HiFi Audio/Voice DSP provides an ultra-low power engine to offload these tasks from the main CPU.”

VoiceBoost speech enhancement solutions enhance voice communication and interaction in a wide range of environments including vehicle interior and street traffic noise, background conversations, and background music noise. VoiceBoost solutions are scalable in MIPS, memory and latency from under 10 msec to over 100 msec to meet the requirements of a broad range of applications including bone conduction, telecom and human machine interfaces.

“Cadence's power- and performance-optimized HiFi Audio/Voice DSP is a great platform for the VoiceBoost solutions,” said Dean Neumann, CEO of Malaspina Labs. “Phones are no longer held only up to the ear in the traditional ‘handset’ manner. With our speech enhancement technologies, now your phone can be controlled by your voice, even when driving, and even in noisy situations. This requires an ultra-low power DSP like the Tensilica HiFi DSPs, which have been optimized for always-listening voice trigger and voice recognition applications.”

About Malaspina Labs

Malaspina Labs advances the state of the art in real-time speech enhancement for ultra-low power devices.  Malaspina Labs focuses on the development of rotation & orientation robust speech processing algorithms which operate deterministically at bone-conduction, telecom, and voice interface latencies within the resource constraints of milliwatt-class processors designed for mobile, embedded, medical and consumer devices.  Malaspina’s VoiceBoost suite of solutions have been shown to increase speech intelligibility by hearing impaired users in noisy environments, as well as to increase automatic speech recognition performance and mobile voice call quality in high noise environments.
